It has been rumored for a while that Jamie Foxx was playing legendary boxer Mike Tyson in a biopic of his life. It seems like that is no longer a rumor and the movie is actually happening with a release coming in couple of years.
One of the things a lot of fans wanted to see in the movie was Tyson’s relationship with Robin Givens who he was married to for a short period.
The relationship was going to be in the movie but then Robin heard about it and put a stop to it according to The Jasmine Brand.
According to reports, attorneys for actress Robin Givens, sent cease and desist letters to both Mike Tyson and Jamie Foxx. The letters reportedly “demand that Mr. Tyson cease and desist from further defaming Ms. Givens, and to put those producing, writing and/or directing the proposed Tyson biopic, and those producing Mr. Tyson’s podcast, on notice that they are to refrain from portraying Ms. Givens in a false, negative and defamatory light.”
“While [she] has attempted to move on, she still finds herself fighting the abusive, demeaning and false accounts of their relationship by Mr. Tyson nearly 35 years later. It is time for Mr. Tyson to let this marriage be the relic of the past that it is.”
It does make sense that she wouldn’t want to be in the movie if she’s going to be seen negatively. It would have made sense for the writers, producers, or director to talk to Robin first if they wanted her in the movie.
She can’t legally stop them from putting her in the movie if what is in the movie accurate. She would have to prove that they are defaming her, but you don’t need permission to do a biopic about anyone.
If they wanted to recreate any of her public comments or videos about their relationship she wouldn’t have a legal leg to stand on.
Just to use an example there are several biopics, documentaries, and series about OJ Simpson and he can’t do anything about it.
