Being Black in America means we have to deal with a lot of BS that other races don’t have to deal with.
One 0f those things is restaurant or club owners making up dumb dress codes on the spot so they don’t have to let us in. It’s 2020 and it’s still happening.
A video from a Georgia restaurant, Umi Sushi, has gone viral after a Black man was kicked out for wearing sneakers. Now, many non Black people will say, “well it’s their business so they can come up with their own rules if they want.” That statement might be true but more times than not, places like this restaurant don’t really have rules like that in place. They just don’t want to let Black people in.
Which is exactly what happened here because there was an old white woman who had on sneakers also and she was allowed to stay in the restaurant. The guy kicking the Black man out tried to say they were different but one was wearing Nike and one was wearing Adidas so the only difference is the name. Also, Twitter found pics of people who have recently been to the restaurant and quite a few of them had on sneakers.
To add to this, the restaurant tried went and added the rules to their website after to make it seem like they weren’t racist.
A couple questions arise from this situation. First, if that was really the rule, why was the white lady allowed to stay? If it’s really a rule, why was the Black man even allowed in the building to see that a white woman had on sneakers? Why did they try and add the rule after the fact?
If you’re going to be racist just come out and say it so Black people can just stay away from you and your business.
