Indiana Fever Falls To New York Liberty 90-87; Sabrina Ionescu Drains Game Winning 3-Pointer

The Indiana Fever opened up their regular season against the New York Liberty at the Barclays Center.

In the first-half, the Liberty went hot from the three-point line with Betnijah Laney finishing as the game leading scorer with 30 points.

Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell added 23 points as the Fever went on a 9-2 run taking the lead 84-81 with 1:32 left on the clock.

Down the stretch, Mitchell was doubled and moved her pivot after attempting to shoot a three resulting in a crucial turnover.

“Sabrina Ionescu drilled a game-winning three-pointer with 0.4 seconds remaining to propel the New York Liberty to a 90-87 season-opening win over the visiting Indiana Fever at Barclays Center on Friday,” via Bleacher Report.

Fever Center Teaira McCowan made her presence felt down low with 16 rebounds and 22 points.

Ionescu secured a double-double dishing out 11 assists despite the Liberty 14 turnovers.

“Well she’s (Ionescu) an outstanding player and we kept her under wraps for three quarters of the game,” Fever coach Marianne Stanley told media members. “Then in the fourth quarter like you said she as soon as she made one shot it almost kind of ignited the rest of the quarter for her. She’s a terrific player.”

The Fever will get a shot at returning the favor on Sunday against the Liberty at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in their rematch.
