Before the murders committed by former Patriot star Aaron Herenandez, there was Rae Carruth. The story goes that in order to avoid having a child with his former girlfriend Cherica Adam he hired a hitman to kill her with Adams only being 10 weeks away from her due date. Cherica died but the baby whose name is Chancellor Lee Adams was able to survive and will now walk the stage with Vance High School graduates on June 5 at Charlotte’s Bojangles’ Coliseum.
The 24-year-old Adams died that night, but before she died she made sure to point out Carruth as the one who was responsible. Chancellor Lee has birthed via emergency C-section and has cerebral palsy and brain damage after being oxygen-deprived from the shooting. Chancellor Lee’s caretaker has been Adams’ mother, Saundra Adams who is very proud of Chancellor graduating.
He’s really worked hard. He’s been on the A/B honor roll a lot. I’m just so proud, so I may be a little loud [at graduation].”
Rae Carruth was convicted and sentenced to 17 years in prison and was released back in 2018. His hitman he hired is still in prison doing a 40-year sentence.
Adams is unaware whether Carruth even knows his son is graduating but hopes that the two of them can have some communication in the future. someone will tell him and they can “have some communication” in the future.
“Saundra Adams was texting with one of Cherica’s best friends the other day. Recounted Saundra: “I said, ‘I know Cherica is in heaven, smiling.’ And she said, ‘Girl, you know that’s an understatement! She is doing more than smiling! She’s singing, dancing, cutting cartwheels — she’s got all the angels together rooting for him. She’s saying: ‘That’s my boy right there!’”
The Panthers, who drafted Rae in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft brought Adams and Chancellor Lee down to the field during a game they attended in 2018.
Since Carruth’s release, he has mentioned wanting to reconnect back with his son.
