More police officers in America continue to abuse their power, while unfortunately, not suffering the consequences for them. This was the case this year in Charleston, SC, involving an unarmed Black man, Jamal Sutherland at Al Cannon Detention Center.
Deputies in Charleston won’t face any charges, after they tased Sutherland six times on January 5. This is all while Sutherland was dealing with mental health issues.
9th Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson stated yesterday that she “couldn’t prove criminal intent,” but said that this incident was “entirely avoidable.” She even went on to claim that “with better treatment, care, and concern by all the institutions involved, Jamal Sutherland would not have died the way he did on January 5.”
Sutherland died after being tased, as this was a result of being forced out of his cell by these deputies, for a bond hearing. These deputies have since been IDed as Brian Houle and Lindsay Fickett. Sheriff Kristin Graziano ended up firing Houle and Fickett.
