For some reason, people in media think athletes HAVE to talk to them.
It’s been highlighted a lot more recently with Naomi Osaka after she announced she wasn’t going to talk to media at the French Open, which caused them to fine her so she just withdrew and said she needed to focus on her mental health.
Instead of supporting her and hoping she got her mind right, lots of people in media talked bad about her because they thought she owed them something.
Since then, she’s appeared on the cover of SI Swimsuit edition and media members didn’t like that. Most notably Clay Travis and Megyn Kelly who attacked her on Twitter because of it.
Naomi didn’t like it and fired back.
They really just want her, and pretty much every other athlete of color, to be robots who don’t talk about any problems. Unless it’s something they agree with.
