Ashanti appeared on ‘The Angie Martinez Show’ Monday evening and talked about seeing her ex-boyfriend Nelly for the first time in over six years at the Verzuz between Fat Joe and Ja Rule.
Ashanti recalls being on stage and being shocked that Nelly was in attendance and even confronted Joe about the situation giving her the best impression of the ‘Lean Back.’
“I didn’t know he was going to be there, Ashanti said. “I was like Joe, why you ain’t tell me he was going to be here. He was like sis I know it’s terrible I didn’t want to risk you not being here if you knew he was here.”
It would make sense Joe would want Ashanti in attendance since the two collab all the time. Ashanti also added that Nelly didn’t whisper anything in her ear, and the two embraced while on stage, so it seems whatever they went through years ago is water under the bridge.
Ashanti met rapper Nelly at a press conference for the 2003 Grammy Awards on January 1, 2003, and they began dating. Ashanti and Nelly ended their eleven-year relationship in 2014.
Ashanti added that the reunion was “very unexpected. I hadn’t seen him in like 6 years or more, spoken or seen, so it was a little awkward.” Nelly and Ashanti did hug on stage at one point. When host Angie Martinez brought up Fat Joe asking if there was a chance of a rekindling between Ashanti and Nelly, Ashanti stressed that the answer to that is “no.”
