Dave Chapelle has reacted to his old high school not inviting him to its fundraiser. While performing a 15-minute standup set in Indianapolis on Friday night following the screening of his “Untitled” documentary, the comedian joked about not getting invited to his old high school’s fundraiser.
“They’re canceling stuff I didn’t even want to do. If you think you’re mad at me — remember, I didn’t disinvite you from anything.”
Dave Chapelle’s high school, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., canceled a planned fundraiser over Dave’s widely criticized comments in his latest Netflix special, “The Closer.”
Complex reports that the school initially announced a Nov. 23 fundraiser for a new theater set to carry Chappelle’s name. However, some of the students weren’t “uncomfortable” with supporting him and allegedly talked about staging a walkout.
The school, in a statement about canceling the fundraiser, said:
“As a learning institution that champions inclusivity, diversity, equity and belonging, we care deeply about protecting the well-being and dignity of every member of our student body, faculty and community. We also believe moving forward with the event, originally scheduled for November 23, 2021, without first addressing questions and concerns from members of the Ellington community, would be a missed opportunity for a teachable moment.”
Here is what Dave Chapelle said while delivering a performance at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis last Friday.
Comedian Dave Chappelle hosted a raucous night of comedy, film, hip-hop and bad karaoke — while also downplaying the lingering controversy surrounding his most recent Netflix special — to a packed Gainbridge Fieldhouse crowd in Indianapolis Friday night.
“Boy, I went too far with ‘The Closer,’ ” Chappelle said, according to the Des Moines Register. “The trans always get mad, but this time I did it.”
“If anyone says trans people are angry at me, they are wrong,” Chappelle said. “And if you see (a trans person), buy them a coffee or lipstick or whatever they want and tell them Dave Chappelle sent you.”
What people don’t understand is you can cancel someone who hasn’t done anything to you.
Chappelle makes jokes, he isn’t harming anyone, and most people seem to understand that.
