During a media session, Floyd Mayweather did not hold back anything as he accused Canelo Alvarez of ducking David Benavidez. According to Floyd:
“Canelo’s a helluva fighter, but I’m my personal opinion he’s ducking Benavidez”.

Floyd told reporters about Canelo: “He’s going up to cruiserweight, he’s fighting a guy that’s really not, ugh, the guy’s up and down. “If it was up to me, we wanna see Benavidez.
“Canelo’s a helluva fighter, but in my personal opinion he’s ducking David Benavidez. “That’s just my personal opinion and I’m allowed to speak my mind.
“He’s going up to cruiserweight, I’m not knocking him, but that same guy was at the Mayweather Boxing Gym, the guys were really getting the best of him in the Mayweather Boxing Gym.
“He’s going up to quote-unquote ‘cruiserweight’ – David Benavidez could beat that same guy…“Do I like this fight? Absolutely not. We wanna see Benavidez, let’s make it happen.”
Here is what Canelo had to say about Benavidez.
“Right now, I can do whatever I want. I faced all the 168lbs world champions; I took the title from all of them. Now I do what I want,” said Canelo Alvarez on Thursday at the WBC convention on why he’s fighting Ilunga Makabu instead of David Benavidez.
There it is. As simple as it is, Canelo explains why he doesn’t have to fight Benavidez. “I do what I want.”
If Canelo does capture the WBC cruiserweight title from Makabu, his next move will likely be to shoot up to heavyweight to pick off WBA ‘regular’ champion Trevor Bryan. Some boxing fans see him as the weakest of the champions, and he’s not a huge puncher. If Canelo bulks up to 200 lbs, he probably can beat that guy.
The problem, of course, is Benavidez lost his belt twice on the scale and by getting caught with cocaine in his system. If he had had a belt at 168, Canelo would have had to beat him to go undisputed.
