Despite the surge in COVID-19 cases, the third film in the latest Spider-Man reboot bagged a whopping $253 million in the United States “giving it the third-highest grossing opening weekend behind Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War.”
The Daily Mail has more:
Spider Man: No Way Home pulled in about $72 to $74 million on Saturday. It grossed $121.5 million on opening day Friday, along with $50 million during Thursday previews.
The two-and-a-half-hour movie stars Tom Holland as Spider Man, Zendaya as love interest Michelle Jones-Watson, and Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange.
No Way Home has no overtaken 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made 247.966 million on opening weekend, as the third best opening of all time.
The film was directed by Jon Watts, who also directed Spider Man: Homecoming in 2017 and ‘Spider Man: Far From Home’ in 2019. It was written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
The huge box office weekend comes despite the United States seeing a surge in new COVID-19 cases, with 127,692 new infections in the week ending December 18.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is looking massive for the global box office.
On Saturday, Holland said on Instagram: ‘Wow guys I can’t believe these number. You made this possible. Your love and support means the world to me. Thank you thank you thank you and if you haven’t seen Spider-Man no way home yet… merry Christmas and you know what to do.’
No Way Home is heading for a possible $500 million global opening without China, Deadline reports.
No Way Home has garnered positive reviews from critics, scoring a 94 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and a 72 on Metacritic.
Most have praised its cast and emotional appeal, but criticized its running time and formulaic plot.
‘It reaches a point at which the division between sincerity and cynicism doesn’t seem to matter much anymore – it will work for the right people. And that is an art in itself,’ according to The Independent.
The New York Times wrote: ‘Like almost every Marvel production, this one is too long and, at two and a half hours, overstays its welcome. But before that, the movie nicely snaps and pops.’
The Atlantic said: ‘It’s a hectic series of plot twists and deus ex machinas that overturns an entire bucket of action figures and smashes them all together with delight. The film might be a new nadir of cinema – but it’s also an undeniably watchable good time.’
