The family of former UNC Charlotte forward Galen Young is getting justice after his death last June.
Miracle Rutherford has been indicted on vehicular homicide stemming from the crash that killed Young. It is an insane story and something that simply shouldn’t have happened.
A woman was indicted on Tuesday on vehicular homicide charges stemming from a June 2021 crash that killed former Hillcrest High School and UNC Charlotte basketball standout Galen Young.
A grand jury returned an indictment against Miracle Rutherford, 19, alleging that she drove recklessly and created a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury. Rutherford remains free on a $30,000 bond, the Shelby County DA’s office said.
The crash happened around 2:45 a.m. on June 5, 2021, as Rutherford was speeding southbound on Horn Lake Road before going airborne and crashing into the corner of a house.
The incident happened in June of 2021 when Rutherford was driving down the street going 65 mph in a 45 mph zone when she then went airborne and crashed into the house Young was in. When police first responded, they asked if there were any injuries but the woman that was there said no and she was there with her son but he wasn’t home at the time.
While at UNC Charlotte, Young was named MVP in the 1999 C-USA Tournament. He also played professionally for 13 years in the U.S. and abroad
Hours later when the family was picking up the debris they found Young’s body and passed away at the scene.
Rutherford is currently free on a $30,000 bond.
