You either fight the bear or get attacked and killed, and for this climber, he had to be bold and fight off this bear that tried attacking him on Mountain Futago in Japan.
According to Vlad;
The situation went down at Mt. Futago in Japan, where the climber could be seen scaling the rocky terrain before a bear seemingly tried to charge at him. It was noting the bear was trying to protect a cub.
When the bear lunged at the man, he was able to move and push the bear away from him. That didn’t stop the bear from returning, though, as the animal tried to lunge at the man again. However, the bear was met with a barrage of kicks and punches to the head.
Eventually, the bear could be seen running off with its cub into the brush nearby. According to TMZ, the climber said he was the one who went into the bear’s territory but had no choice but to defend himself.
More than 50% of these attacks involved a female bear with cubs. The mama bears were probably trying to protect their children.
Geographically, the majority of attacks took place in Europe—291. Here are some other areas where bear attacks are less unusual:
- 190 in Russia, Iran, and Turkey
- 183 in North America
- 61*, as follows:
- 35Â in Japan
- 11 in Bosnia and Herzegovina
- 9 in Macedonia
- 4 in Albania
- 2 in Nepal
There have been 13 bear attacks in North America in the 2020s.
Five of those attacks are attributed to black bears (Ursus americanus). The other eight involved brown bears (Ursus arctos). This shows an upward trend compared to previous years.
However, Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team assures that this isn’t unprecedented and doesn’t prove that bears are getting more aggressive—instead, it’s a combination of bear population expansion and increased recreational presence of people.
