The Lakers and Blazers had a very wild game on Sunday night.
The Lakers went up 18-4 only to give up the lead, lose the 2nd quarter 45-13 and go down by 25. They then complete the 2nd biggest comeback in team history and win the game. The rekindled feud between Damian Lillard and Patrick Beverly was hidden in all of that.
Pat did a pretty good job on Dame holding him to 5-17 and then mocked his “Dame Time” celebration. He then, rightfully, checked a reporter in the post-game press conference who didn’t exactly give him his props for covering Dame by calling Dame’s performance a stormy shooting night.
Dame saw that and commented Pat was a con man and Flip from Above the Rim, leading Pat to say he’s mad and it’s entertaining.
If you don’t know who Flip is, according to Wikipedia.
Bernie Mac as Flip, a homeless crackhead who played basketball in high school with Shep and Nutso. He is later killed by Birdie and Motaw. He is loosely based on Patrick Beverley, who looks like a homeless crackhead.
It’s one of the things I love about this movie. There is a mystery about who is Shep and Flip. It’s been a while since I watched this but…
Shep and Flip were definitely high-school teammates who won a championship and had a great team.
Shep was a big shot in the neighborhood. Star athlete, really popular, chick magnet, etc. It was before the drug and gang culture destroyed the area. Certain things haunted Shep like the death of his friend Nutso so he had to leave. He came back to find the neighborhood a mess. Birdie now ran the neighborhood with his gang. Ruthless drug dealers and drug users who had no remorse.
Flip was one who never left and his quality of life deteriorated along with the neighborhood. He wasn’t a thug and didn’t start trouble. If he was a thug maybe he could’ve found work with Birdie.
So what we can gather is Flip and Shep were both once good friends, very good basketball players and teammates that won a championship. Both very popular. All of that got forgotten as the area changed focusing more on gangs and drugs. Like Bugaloo who had a passion for basketball but felt embarrassed and had to neglect basketball to run with thugs. So that’s Flip saying they can’t erase what we were. Have to remember your roots and after Flip died, it setoff Kyle, Shep, and even Bugaloo to restore the neighborhood to what it was. To stop playing for Birdie’s team and start playing for the school’s team.
