Byron Jones was well on his way to having a prominent NFL career since being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2015. As a versatile defensive back that could play either corner or safety, Jones landed himself a major deal with the Miami Dolphins in 2020. Jones secured a five year, $82 million contract and was preparing to establish himself as a critical part of why the Dolphins defense sees success alongside Dolphins star CB Xavien Howard.
Unfortunately, as it is with many other star players around the league, injuries stifled Jones’ career. The defensive back reportedly missed all of last season due to suffering an Achilles tendon injury. Jones took to Twitter to quote retweet an old video posted by the NFL. The video in question was of Jones’ performance at the NFL Combine. Calling him “Mr. Broad Jump”.
“Much has changed in 8 years. Today I can’t run or jump because of my injuries sustained playing this game. DO NOT take the pills they give you. DO NOT take the injections they give you. If you absolutely must, consult an outside doctor to learn the long-term implications.”
The man didn’t stop there. Jones followed up his initial tweet with a comment down below. He made it crystal clear that all the wealth and fame he got is not worth the significant injuries he’s not only suffered, but also still has to deal with.
“It was an honor and privilege to play in the NFL but it came at a regrettable cost I did not foresee. In my opinion, no amount of professional success or financial gain is worth avoidable chronic pain and disabilities. Godspeed to the draft class of 2023.”
It’s worth noting that Jones has not officially retired from football, though he has hinted about it in his tweet. The defensive back currently has no plans to retire, according to ESPN.
Injuries are a part of the game. That’s just a fact. Even so, to have the type of injury bug Jones and some other players have had the last few years doesn’t paint the NFL’s medical practices in a positive light.
