It’s officially official, folks. The Las Vegas Raiders have informed quarterback Derek Carr that he has been released from the team, according to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter. After refusing to waive his no-trade clause for the New Orleans Saints, or any other team for that matter, releasing him was the only viable option the Raiders had. It had to be done by a certain time today, or else the $40.4 million that was based in his contract would have become guaranteed.
Tim Younger posted a tweet following the news.
“We wish the Raiders the best of luck. This is the tough part of this business. That’s the point; it’s just business. Time now to reset for both sides. Derek chooses to hold on to many good memories and friendships, without any ill will. That’s who he is. Onward and upward.”
A new era begins for the Raiders, after having spent nine seasons with Carr as their quarterback. A shame that he only got to share the field with his former college teammate, Davante Adams, for one season. Look for the Raiders to take a swing on a young QB in this year’s draft. One name that’s been linked to them so far, is Ohio State QB CJ Stroud.
Meanwhile, Carr and his camp prepares to field as many visits and potential offers as possible. The quarterback will be considered one of the top free-agents of the offseason. One team that’s consistently been linked to Carr is the New Orleans Saints, who reportedly had the framework of a trade deal in place should Carr had decided to waive his no-trade clause. Another team that’s believed to be in the hunt, is another NFC South team.
The Carolina Panthers.
The Panthers recently drafted former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral. They also still have Sam Darnold. It may not make sense for them to go after Carr, but really it does when you consider the overall state of the NFC South division. Panthers have a young defense, with talented offensive weapons at both RB and WR. Panthers had put together a strong run game this year, even after trading away their star Christian McCaffrey. With the recent hiring of Frank Reich, it’s very possible that the Panthers are in “win now” mode just like the Saints.
