The NFL draft is a little over a month away, meaning lots of mock drafts, rumors, and questions surrounding many players and teams.
One of the biggest questions for this year’s draft is who will go first. Some mock drafts have CJ Stroud. Some have Anthony Richardson, some with Will Levis, and some with Bryce Young. The only certain thing is that a QB will be the first name called and put on the Panthers hat afterward.
For Young, many “experts” have advised against taking him to the top spot because of his height. He measures 5’10”, which is usually seen as too small for NFL QBs, but there has been some success from the shorter NFL QBs, with Russell Wilson and Drew Brees being two of the more successful ones.
It’s going to be a very tough choice for the Panthers, but first-year Panthers head coach Frank Reich says Young’s height won’t be an issue for them and won’t rule him out because of it.
“Don’t read anything into it,” said Reich, who was a 6-foot-4 NFL quarterback. “I’m just saying that because all these people are putting this label on me that I only look at big quarterbacks.”
“When you have the No. 1 pick you don’t have to play games, right?” Reich said. “It’s not like we’re trying to fool anybody. What we’re trying to do is take all the time we can on the evaluation.”
It’s going to be very interesting to see what decision they make.
Being a good QB in the NFL is more about intangibles than skills. We have seen that throughout the history of the NFL. The best QBs haven’t always been the biggest or had the strongest arms. It is often the ones who make the best decisions, who are leaders and calm in the pocket.
These happened to be the best traits of Bryce Young, so I wouldn’t be too concerned with his height.
