Talks about retirement aren’t completely out of the books of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford as he is likely to call it quits with the NFL according to assessments and reports via TPS;
It was a rough year for the Los Angeles Rams in 2022 after the team won the Super Bowl last February. They looked less like the defending champions and more like a team that did not belong on the field with any team.
They became the first defending Super Bowl champion to miss the playoffs since the 2016 Denver Broncos.
Their 34-year-old passer Matthew Stafford, who was placed on injured reserve with a concussion and a neck injury at the end of the year, replied “no” when asked if he is going to retire on his wife Kelly’s “The Morning After” podcast. He may have meant it then, but those questions are coming back now in the offseason. The veteran quarterback did not play another game in 2022 because of a spinal cord contusion.
This week, NFL insider Matthew Berry stated that retirement is not out of the question for Stafford as he could barely throw the ball during the 2022 season.
Stafford missed eight games, had multiple concussion scares, and the team decided to shut him down when the season was all but lost. He is 35 years old and is not getting younger. His wife has stated multiple times that she would love for him to retire, but he does not appear to be on board with that right now.
Stafford signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension with the Rams last offseason, so that’s a lot of money to leave on the table should he decide to hang up his cleats this offseason.
Stafford completed 68 percent of his passes in 2022 for 2,087 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He was also sacked 29 times in nine games. He was sacked 30 times in 17 games in 2021.
