To make it in the company of Michael Jordan, regardless of what it is, is a once in a lifetime occasion. It’s basically like having your name immortalized. So when news broke that Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant signed a lifetime contract with Nike, the overwhelming support that followed was well-deserved.
Boardroom came out with news that Durant put ink to paper, signing Nike’s third ever lifetime contract. The other two players they’ve ever done that for, it was with both Michael Jordan and LeBron James. That’s some pretty elite company to be in. Durant’s been a partner of Nike for a long time.
Although they’ve achieved great success together, he never imagined that all the work they put in would lead to something like this:
“When I first signed with Nike, I couldn’t have dreamed of how far we’d go in this partnership. We’ve done amazing work creatively and philanthropically,” he said. “We’ve done amazing work creatively and philanthropically. We’ve traveled the world together and built a business that will now last forever. I’m excited for the future and honored to be in rare company with this deal.”
Nike EVP of Global Sports Marketing John Slusher spoke glowingly about Durant, and the longstanding relationship the man has built as part of the Nike family:
“As one of best basketball players in the world, Kevin Durant has been an important part of the Nike family for the past 16 years. We look forward to continuing to serve the next generation of athletes together.”
Durant is a 15-year NBA veteran and 13-time All-Star. He has won two NBA championships and three Olympic gold medals as part of Team USA. He’s also 13th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Durant is currently making his 12th appearance in the playoffs and his first with the Suns. They face the Denver Nuggets in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals this upcoming Saturday. You got to think that Durant’s going to want to put on a heck of a showing after landing a deal like this.
Congratulations to you, Durant. You earned this.
