Alex Pereira, the former middleweight champion, didn’t hold back in responding to Anthony Smith’s recent criticism regarding his move to the light heavyweight division. Smith, who not only competes in the Octagon but also serves as a desk analyst for ESPN and co-hosts the “Believe You Me” podcast with Michael Bisping, questioned Pereira’s prowess at light heavyweight during the UFC Fight Night 225 media day.
During the media event, Smith candidly expressed his view that Pereira no longer appears to be the imposing and intimidating force he once was when he fought in the middleweight division. Smith’s words didn’t sit well with Pereira, who is known for his remarkable achievements in a short span of time and is poised for a potential second UFC title.
Pereira Responds: Jealousy and Criticism from an Unexpected Source
In response to Smith’s comments, Pereira took to his YouTube channel to address the matter. He expressed his surprise at the criticism coming from Smith and admitted he couldn’t understand the basis for such negativity. Pereira questioned Smith’s motives, saying, “Since he’s a commentator, I always see him talking – especially about me. He talks really bad. I don’t know what he has against me.”
Pereira didn’t hesitate to suggest that jealousy could be a factor in Smith’s critique. He pointed out that his swift rise and accomplishments might have caused resentment. Pereira shared, “Today he relishes bashing other athletes because he has no clue what they go through. And a commentator who’s a fighter knows how tough it is, but somehow he chooses not to give them any credit. At least stay silent.”
The Brazilian fighter criticized Smith’s tendency to offer negative opinions without fully comprehending the challenges fighters face. He accused Smith of seeking the limelight by making unwarranted comments, even though Smith himself doesn’t attend the fights. Pereira emphasized that Smith’s comments seem aimed at garnering attention rather than contributing constructively to the discourse.
While Smith is known for being outspoken, Pereira’s candid response highlights the sensitivity and passion that fighters hold for their craft. The exchange underscores the complexity of both the physical and emotional aspects of professional fighting and the importance of mutual respect within the fighting community.
