Klay Thompson Shocker! Reveals That During His Rookie Season, He and Stephen Curry Didn’t Talk to Each Other

Having worked together for the Golden State Warriors for the past 12 seasons, Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry get along incredibly well. Both on and off the court, they have a close friendship. They have also shared four championships. Although two men who are now so close had no relationship for a while, you could argue that they were the best backcourt ever. When Thompson appeared on Podcast P, he admitted that the two of them didn’t even communicate during his first season with the Warriors after being selected as the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draught.  Thompson said : “I don’t think me and Steph said a word to each other the first year, to be honest,”. “Steph only played like 20 games that year, I was riding the bench first 30 games of the year, I’ll get in, I was a shooter off the bench backing up Monta (Ellis) and Dorrell (Wright) and stuff.

“I don’t even have that many stories about Steph from my rookie year because we didn’t really speak to each other that much,”  “I was so quiet. When you’re a rookie, you don’t want to step on the vets’ toes. I was like the anti-Draymond (Green), Draymond came in he was just yapping the whole time, he was making his presence felt. I was just kind of in the background like I’mma do my work, be the quiet assassin, and just observe.”

Curry and shy youngster Klay didn’t really talk, which may not have been all that odd given that Curry wasn’t exactly a vocal leader in the locker room. In addition to suffering with injuries to his right ankle and foot, Steph was limited to just 26 games during that 2011–12 lockout-shortened season. During his recovery, he would have spent a lot of time away from the squad.

Klay Thompson discussed how their relationship progressed

By the start of his second season, Klay was a regular starter for the Warriors, but he and Curry didn’t really get along. For the two of them to start getting along, Klay said it ultimately took them travelling to the Canary Islands for the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Klay Thompson said  “Our relationship really didn’t really build until our third year when we played with Team USA,” “We finally hung out off the court because we had nothing else to do. Where were we, like (the) Canary Islands, we had nothing else to do so we went and played golf. We finally got to know each other on the golf course and that’s where I learned like, ‘Oh man, this dude’s a two-sport athlete.'”
