Caleb Farley hasn’t had the smoothest start to his NFL career, since being taken 22nd overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The former Virginia Tech product was projected to be one of the best cornerback prospects entering the draft that year, despite the injuries he’s had to deal with. He was taken by the Tennessee Titans on what many thought was a gamble, due to the red flags his injury history gave off.
This week, heartbreaking out of North Carolina. Caleb’s father, 61-year-old Robert Farley, was reportedly caught in a house explosion. The home was said to have been owned Caleb, according to officials.
Tyler Greenawalt from Yahoo Sports has the details:
“Farley, 24, was not present at the house at the time of the explosion, but another unidentified male was injured, according to officials. He was taken to a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, with non-life-threatening injuries. Queen City News reported Farley was with his family speaking to authorities at the scene Tuesday morning.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation but foul play is not suspected, according to the Iredell County Fire Marshal’s Office. Neighbors told Queen City News they smelled gas and heard “a loud explosion” around 11:55 p.m. Monday. Authorities claim the house was completely leveled by the explosion.”
The Titans cornerback played in just 6 games in 2022. Of those 6 games, Farley has only started in one of them before having his season cut short. Despite all of that, he never lost faith. He had set his sights on being healthy to start 2023, and get his career turned around in the right direction.
Titans head coach Mike Vrabel, as well as many of Farley’s teammates, came together and offered support following Tuesday’s training camp practice. All the prayers and well wishes to Farley and his family during this incredibly hard time.
UPDATE: Iredell Emergency Management confirms the man who died in the explosion was Robert Farley.
