When Michael Jordan Suspiciously Lost a One-On-One Match Against an Investment Banker

Michael Jordan is renowned for being a merciless competitor who would do whatever it took to beat his opponents. Jordan not only defeated, but utterly decimated his adversaries, relishing every second of it. Because of this, most people consider Michael Jordan to be the G.O.A.T. of the NBA. Oh, and Jordan’s case for being the G.O.A.T. is also strengthened by his six NBA championships, five MVP awards, six Finals MVPs, ten scoring titles, and Defensive Player of the Year honor. Jordan is frequently referred to as the best one-on-one player in the history of basketball. Therefore, it would surprise some to learn that MJ was once defeated by an investment banker in a game of one-on-one on television.

Rogers versus Jordan

One of the best basketball camps for kids is Michael Jordan’s Michael Jordan Flight School, and it is regularly held. Jordan has other camps as well, though. For males aged 34 and older, MJ also hosts his Michael Jordan Senior Flight School camp. From 1997 until 2010, he ran this camp at the Mirage Resort Casino in Las Vegas. You had to be at least 34 years old and pay $15,000 to participate in the four-day program. So, it goes without saying that you needed to have some money in order to join Jordan’s camp, and it is safe to say that John Rogers had plenty of money.

Rogers, who serves as the CEO of Ariel Capital Management, attended the Michael Jordan Senior Flight School camp in 2003, his third time doing so. Jordan and Rogers had a friendship going at the time. When MJ was trying to get back in shape and get ready for his return to the NBA in 2001, Rogers was one of the players Jordan invited to play in scrimmages.

Rogers said : “I was there for about a half-dozen games, but eventually got cut when some of the top college players who were finishing their seasons came home,” “I got switched off on Michael from time to time during those games, and I remember he was going up for a shot once, and I thought for sure I was going to block it. I whiffed.”

A little after Jordan’s final NBA retirement, Rogers attended the camp in 2003. Jordan ran the camp, and at the conclusion of it, as he always did, Jordan asked if any of the kids would like to play him in a one-on-one contest with a maximum score of three points.
