Star tight end Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs hyperextended his knee on Tuesday during practice, as was previously mentioned. The future Hall of Famer apparently averted a serious injury, but it’s uncertain whether he’ll be available for the team’s Week 1 start on Thursday.
Kelce’s ailment has been discussed by Miami, Florida-based sports medical doctor Dr. Jesse Morse. Morse considers a bone bruise/knee sprain, swelling/pain, and a capsular sprain to constitute “the minimum” injury.
Chiefs’ HC Andy Reid told reporters that Travis Kelce hyper-extended his knee at practice today and his status for Thursday night’s opener vs the Lions is uncertain.

#Chiefs star TE Travis Kelce’s status is in doubt for Thursday night’s opener vs. the #Lions because of his knee injury, but sources tell me and @TomPelissero it’s not believed to be a long-term injury. They’ll wait for swelling to go down and go from there. pic.twitter.com/pzuOYz2wt2

Although Dr. Morse believes it is unlikely that Kelce will play in Week 1, he does state that it is “possible” if his MRI is negative.
Travis Kelce
Knee hyperextended
Don’t know if left or right, he has a big history of left
At the minimum:
1. Bone bruise + knee sprain
2. Swelling, pain
3. Capsular sprainExpect an MRI today to determine if there are any:
1. Ligament tear (ACL, PCL)
2. Meniscal tear… pic.twitter.com/WTYzsVimuM— Jesse Morse, M.D. (@DrJesseMorse) September 5, 2023
UPDATE: Travis Kelce #ChiefsKingdom
ACL is INTACT (hooray)
PCL is likely mildly sprained
Additional swelling & bone bruise likely
Week 1 is UNLIKELY given timing (too risky)
Week 2 or 3 is possibleMore details here: pic.twitter.com/BUOPRprt3b

Can Kansas City Chiefs do a Patriots and be champions again?
The Chiefs will enjoy a much-needed 10-day break following their Thursday night game against the Detroit Lions before travelling to Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 17. After that, they’ll be back for a Week 3 matchup against the Chicago Bears.
Kelce and the reigning champions suffer a setback, but they can also breathe a sigh of relief knowing that he escaped with a major long-term injury. Since 2014, the soon-to-be 34-year-old has played in at least 15 games per season and six full seasons, demonstrating his incredible durability.
The two-time Super Bowl winner is a picture of consistency, surpassing 1,000 yards receiving each year since 2016. He had a career-high 12 touchdown receptions, 1,338 receiving yards, and 110 catches last year. Kansas City is attempting to become the first club since the 2003 and 2004 New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl twice.
