With Thompson’s struggles persisting, Smith believes a change of scenery could be the catalyst needed for the four-time champion to regain his consistency this season.
Stephen A. Smith Joins the Talk on Klay Thompson-Lakers Trade Rumors
Thompson’s offensive performance has been lackluster, falling short of the Golden State Warriors’ expectations. The five-time All-Star is currently posting his lowest averages since his rookie year, with 15.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.
According to Smith, Thompson could thrive alongside LeBron James if he were to join the Lakers this season. “Me, personally, if he’s not in Golden State, the one place I wanna see Klay Thompson in is LA. Let LeBron James have that brother to throw the basketball to and watch what that dude does,” Smith expressed.
While acknowledging Thompson’s recent struggles, Smith maintains that the shooting guard possesses exceptional talent. “Klay is still special. He’s just not looking as special as we know him to be. So he can have an attitude, he can act like, ‘People don’t do what I do.’ Well, guess what? Did you feel that way when you were out for two years and came back for the very first time?” Smith pointed out.
The Lakers are actively seeking to acquire another star player this season, and Thompson is among the names being considered for a potential trade. The other half of the Splash Brothers is currently in the final year of his five-year, $190 million contract.
Contract negotiations between Thompson and the Golden State Warriors have been contentious, with both parties struggling to find common ground.
