On the night of the murder, Bustami called 911 and calmly confessed to killing her mother, stating she “broke the table on her head” and “cut her neck off.” She was later found by California Highway Patrol officers more than 150 miles away from the scene, covered in blood and again admitting to the killing.

Bustami’s mental health was a significant factor in her case. Her public defender noted that a psychologist found her experiencing “intermittent exacerbations of psychosis” and in need of psychiatric treatment.

Initially pleading not guilty, Bustami later accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty but mentally ill. This plea acknowledged her mental illness at the time of the offense.

Judge Jacqueline Bluth sentenced Bustami to 15 years to life, with eligibility for parole in 2037, considering her time served. The sentence also mandates that Bustami receive medical care for her mental illness, given her history of outbursts and mental health diagnoses.

Hend Bustami went viral for bragging about being too pretty to get arrested and now, she is going to spend 15 years of her life in prison over the brutal murder of her mother.
