The Patriots plan to elevate DeMarcus Covington to the position of defensive coordinator, according to many sources. As the defensive line coach since 2020, the 34-year-old has been a member of the New England coaching staff since 2017. Under new head coach Jerod Mayo, the New England Patriots have significantly changed their coaching staff.
After 24 years together, famous head coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft declared two weeks ago that they were going separate ways. Mayo took Belichick’s spot, who is still a free agent.

With Covington’s promotion, the Patriots have filled one key position under Mayo. In order to replace Bill O’Brien, who returned to the collegiate levels to take over the Ohio State offensive coordinator position, Mayo must now choose a new offensive coordinator.
