It has been a remarkable debut season for Jaime Jaquez Jr. The Miami Heat’s 18th overall choice in the 2023 NBA Draft has averaged 12.9 points while assuming a crucial role. Among rookies this season, Jaquez is averaging the third-most steals and the fifth-most points.
Is it premature to declare that Jaquez has been the finest Heat rookie since Dwayne Wade in 2003–04, even though the season is just halfway over? Wade had a 16.2 point scoring average in his debut campaign. One year later, the Heat became a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference thanks to his quick turnaround of the club that missed the playoffs.

Other rookies who came close to Jaime Jaquez Jr.
Over the previous 20 years, there have been more outstanding Heat rookies. The Heat’s most recent outstanding rookie season came from Kendrick Nunn’s effort in the 2018–19 campaign. In the voting for Rookie of the Year that season, he came in second. Nunn played 67 games and averaged 15.3 points.
In 2008, Michael Beasley was selected second overall, becoming him the highest-drafted player in Heat history. Beasley had a 13.9 point and 5.4 rebound average in his debut season with the league.
Jaquez didn’t have a clear role to begin the year. He gained more minutes and consistently demonstrated his value in the lineup. On the team, Jaquez has played the second-most minutes and made the second-most appearances.
When the season is over, it will be interesting to see how Jaquez compares to other rookies. In addition, he will rank among the Heat’s finest rookies in the previous 20 years.
