“I Have The Perfect Last Name For It So I Was Really Wondering What Took Them So Long To Ask” NBA HOF Reggie Miller

If you were alive in the 1970’s and 80’s there’s a good chance you remember the old Miller Lite “Tastes Great or Less Filling” debate.

Stars at the time spent years debating if the great taste or it being less filling was the best thing about the beer. They brought out strs like John Madden, Rodney Dangerfield, and Dick Butkus, just to name a few, debating which was better. When it comes to naming iconic and classic commercials, this one is certainly high up on the list.

Even though plenty of people remember the commercials and stars, it kind of went away.

Until now.

“In 1975, Miller Lite sparked a debate where iconic stars disagreed for decades: what’s the best thing about Miller Lite? Does it Taste Great, or is it Less Filling? To revive the iconic dispute, Miller Lite is introducing a new generation of All Stars who will go head to head in a new, modern evolution of the campaign, airing for the first time during March Madness” Miller Lite says in a press release announcing the revival of the great debate.

Miller Lite is bringing back the iconic campaign with a handful a legends from all kinds of disciplines. The likes of Reggie Miller, JJ Watt, Mia Hamm, David Ortiz, Jorge Posada, and Luke Wilson teamed up to bring back an iconic debate in an iconic way. Which is better; the less filling or the great taste?

NBA legend Reggie Miller spoke with BSO about his excitement reviving the debate, working with other legends and even got into some NBA talk.

You [Reggie Miller] and a handful of other stars are bringing back the classic “Great Taste, Less Filling” debate. How does it feel bringing back such an iconic question?

It’s great! Like you mentioned it’s an iconic debate. I mean the guys they had in the past debating this are all legends and iconic in their own right. To be a part of something like this, I feel very fortunate and I don’t take that for granted.

Was it easy for Miller Lite to convince you to join the campaign?

Heck no! [laughs] I have the perfect last name for it so I was really wondering what took them so long to ask. I mean Miller and Miller Lite just sounds so good doesn’t it? [laughs]

The classic commercial had stars like John Madden, Dick Butkus, Rodney Dangerfield, just to name a few. This time around along with you, they’re bringing in JJ Watt, Mia Hamm, David Ortiz, and Jorge Posada. What was it like working with legends in different sports?

I spent most of my time with Luke Wilson who is just amazing. But I also did some shots with JJ [Watt] and that was fun. We had really good time catching up. It was just an overall great set.
Luke is great to work with. Makes things really comfortable because he’s so fun.

Outside of working with Miller Lite do you have anything else you’re currently workin on?

Oh yes. As you know I’m big into cycling. It’s something that I am really passionate about and really have gotten into in retirement. I recently completed my first Enduro race. It was tough. The conditions made it even tougher with the rain. With a lot of help through my training I made it though. I have another big race coming up soon that I’m preparing for and I cannot wait for it.

I would be remised if I didn’t ask you about basketball considering you are a NBA legend. With the season winding down, the Celtics and Nuggets look like they’re on a collision course for the Finals. Do you see any other teams being a threat to that?

Man both the Celtics and Nuggets have been playing really well. The Celtics are running away with the one seed in the Eastern Conference and the defending champs [Nuggets] are playing their best basketball at the right time. However, there are still a lot of really good teams in both conferences that I wouldn’t be surprised make it out. You have the Heat who always give the Celtics issues and just know how to play playoff basketball. Of course there’s the Bucks who have two legit stars who know how to win and look like they’re really figuring it out. The Sixers could become a big threat once [Joel] Embiid gets back.
In the West, man oh man. We are in for a treat out West. One through ten or eleven are good. Have the vet teams like the Nuggets, Clippers and Suns who have star power and proven winners who have all had success in the playoffs. Have to mention the Warriors with Steph [Curry] and the Lakers with Lebron [James] and AD [Anthony Davis]. We can never count them out. It doesn’t matter how old they are.
Then the young guns. Man, those young guns like the Thunder and Wolves are really good. They don’t know any better but they are huge threats. Really fun to watch. Antman [Anthony Edwards] is a DAWG and has the Wolves thriving. SGA [Shai Gilgeous-Alexander] has been killing it and those young bulls with him can surprise everyone.

You mentioned the Thunder. They’ve been a big surprise team this season. They currently sit at second in the West, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been on a tear, Jalen Williams has been a killer and Chet Holmgren has been phenomenal. What are your thoughts on them?

They can go. Those young bulls can absolutely go. They are so good. I love watching them play. It’s a really fun style, they play the right way on both ends, really well coached. Man I love watching them play. Just so fun. I think they can go far. It’s going to depend on matchups but I can’t wait to see them play in the postseason.

In addition to bring back the iconic debate, Miller Lite will also be dropping Beer Tapes to fans who love the campaign. They will include a double feature set that has one interactive playable VHS where fans can join in on the fun debate and another VHS shaped novelty glass that fans can drink out of.
