If Zach Wilson cannot be traded, the Jets will retain him: Woody Johnson

Is Zach coming back? Owner of the Jets Woody Johnson stated on Monday that if the organization is unable to locate a trade partner for quarterback Zach Wilson, Wilson would not be released. Johnson stated during the NFL owners meetings, “We’re going to keep him if we don’t trade him.”

The Jets have been looking for a taker to replace their former No. 2 overall pick, but nothing has come of their efforts.

It was unexpected to hear Johnson declare the Jets might think about holding onto Wilson. Johnson may have just been posturing on Monday to attempt to prevent damaging any trade value Wilson may have.

Johnson agreed that Wilson would benefit more from starting over with a different squad. Johnson stated,

“From his standpoint, it’s probably better if he changes faces and gets to a new place and he can wipe the slate clean,” “I think that would probably be better for him.” “Zach is a valuable asset,”  “I said it would be better for him. No, we’re not just going to release him.”

Johnson made it plain that he is not simply going to send Wilson away, even though he stated that a new team would be in his best interest.

How badly did Zach Wilson miss Aaron Rodgers ?

Since shortly after the season concluded, Wilson’s agent, Brian Ayrault, has been granted authority to look for a trade partner, according to Jets general manager Joe Douglas.

Wilson struggled both on and off the field in his first three seasons with the Jets, going 12-21 as a starter. Wilson should have sat behind Aaron Rodgers last season, as the team had intended, according to Johnson.

Rather, when Rodgers was injured four plays into the season, Wilson took over. Johnson said,

“I feel badly about Zach in some ways,” “Last year would have been great, it would have been the first time he could just sit back and watch a master at work. He’s never had that. He’s been in the fire from Day 1. I think that’s what he needs. He needs to be in a place where he can observe for a while. He’s got the skill. He can do everything. There’s a reason we drafted him at No. 2 overall. I have confidence that he’ll get there at some point.”

“I don’t nix them,” “If it was nixed, it would be Joe that nixed it.”
