Carson Wentz, the Chiefs’ Backup Quarterback, Explains What Makes Patrick Mahomes Unique

The football community was curious about Carson Wentz’s chances of playing behind Patrick Mahomes, the team’s standout quarterback, from the minute he signed his contract with the Chiefs. Wentz is a seasoned player, so joining the Chiefs may be more than simply a move to get playing time for him. It may also be an opportunity to learn from one of the greatest players in history.

The former backup quarterback for the Rams couldn’t help but wax poetic about his time spent with Mahomes during the offseason grind during a press conference held recently following OTAs.

Carson Wentz speaks highly of Patrick Mahomes

With admiring eyes, Wentz acknowledged:

You know, I mean, this time of year, it’s different for everybody. But I mean just seeing him live in practice. I mean, he just processes the game really quick.”  “He calls protections, he’s in and out of the huddle, he’s throwing anticipatory throws, like all that stuff, all that stuff you see from afar, but it’s just fun to (actually) see it,” “There are so many different windows on plays that maybe I didn’t see before, because Mahomes just plays so quick out there,” he admitted, with a hint of wonder.”

Mahomes’ teammates and coaches have repeatedly expressed the same opinion over the years: the quarterback’s ability to absorb the game at a breakneck speed is genuinely amazing.

But rather than being a cause of fear, Wentz sees this close-up perspective as a master class in the craft of quarterbacking. Perhaps a great chance to learn the nuances of the role from one of its most intelligent individuals.
