Joakim Noah Has a Special Reason for Cheering for the Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals Despite Hatred for Them

Joakim Noah, a native of New York and former standout player for the Chicago Bulls, has a strong instinct to support the Boston Celtics. The 39-year-old is grudgingly putting his prejudice aside, though, in the hopes that the Eastern Conference winners would upset the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals that are currently in progress. His only motivation for reluctantly supporting the Celtics is Al Horford, a close friend and former college teammate.

In an interview with KG Certified, Noah expressed his wish that his old Florida Gators teammate would one day win an NBA championship. Additionally, he emphasized Horford’s importance to the Celtics‘ success, adding,

“It’s bugged out that I’m rooting for Boston a little bit ’cause I want him [Al Horford] to get it…I want Horfy to get one bad. He deserves it…He is making that team go and it shows the importance of having the right OG…Having guys that you could talk to that have been through every situation. He is that guy.”

Joakim Noah and his bromance with Horford

Horford and Noah have been pals since their days at the University of Florida. Before declaring for the NBA draft in 2007, the pair played three seasons together, helping their alma mater win two NCAA titles. They joined the program in 2004. The large guys developed into stars and were selected to many All-Star teams, but neither player has won the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Noah’s dream of winning an NBA championship was dashed in 2021 when a string of injuries forced him to abandon his career. While the former Bulls star was unable to reach his objective, Horford is on the verge of doing so—albeit with the team that his college colleague despises.

But Noah’s bitterness at the Celtics is subdued by his close friend’s joy, so he reluctantly supports them to win the championship. Obviously, the New York native finds it difficult to root for Boston since he has a deep-seated distaste for the city’s sports teams.
