Kenyon Martin Explains the “Mark Jackson Reason” for Monty Williams’ Termination

It was clear that the Detroit Pistons would have a difficult time winning games when the season began. Despite having Cade Cunningham as a cornerstone player to build their organization around, they had the worst record in the league. Thus, some alteration to the framework was unavoidable. The front staff of the Pistons made the decision to terminate Monty Williams after the team finished 14–68.

On Gil’s Arena podcast, Kenyon Martin discussed the “Mark Jackson issue” when discussing potential problems inside the Pistons organization. He said,

“Rumor has it that Mark Jackson hasn’t gotten a job because of some of the religious things that he believes in, right? And he tries to force those things on other people. You can’t do that in certain environments.”

Martin thought that, similar to how Jackson attempted to impose his religious views on others, Williams might have done the same to the players and staff. He said,

“I’m not saying that was what Monty(Williams) was doing. But his personality is that of—Cool, that’s what you are, that’s who you are but you can’t force that on people. And that same way in the locker room, certain things might rub people the wrong way, might rub the management the wrong way.”

Williams was signed by the Detroit Pistons front staff before he had a chance to assess the team’s strengths and deficiencies. Like Arenas stated,

“The fact that they paid him and fired him after one year says more about them(Pistons Ownership) than it does about him.”
