Delonte West is a former professional basketball player who most notably played in the NBA. Born on July 26, 1983, in Washington, D.C., he played college basketball at Saint Joseph’s University before being drafted by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2004 NBA Draft.
West had a career that included time with several NBA teams, including the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Dallas Mavericks. Known for his versatility, he could play both guard positions and was respected for his defense and playmaking abilities.
Despite his talents on the court, West has faced significant personal and financial challenges in his life, particularly with mental health issues. This has led to periods of homelessness and legal troubles, drawing attention from the media and his former teammates, some of whom have offered help and support.
In more recent years, there have been efforts by friends, fellow players, and organizations within the NBA community to assist West in getting back on his feet and addressing his mental health and well-being.
Unfortunately, those efforts have failed, and he has been arrested again, according to TMZ Sports.
The Fairfax County Police Department tells TMZ Sports … Delonte West suffered a medical emergency as cops were attempting to arrest him Thursday morning.
Police say officers had been trying to serve a warrant on the former NBA star for violating the conditions of his release … when he took off.
According to the FCPD, during an ensuing foot pursuit, they lost sight of West briefly, before they ultimately discovered him “unresponsive.”
“Narcan was administered by officers,” cops tell us, “but [it] did not have the desired effect. He was transported to a local hospital and Narcan was administered again, which yielded the desired effect. West was released from the hospital and transported to the ADC.”
Jail records show West still remains in custody.
Keep West in your prayers.
