Tom Brady, the former quarterback for the Patriots, is one of the quarterbacks who embodies mastery in the position. He created an unprecedented dynasty for the New England Patriots by masterminding their success for twenty years. It wasn’t without difficulties, though. The former 199th pick was forced to commit to year-round preparation and painstaking strategy research, something he openly addressed in a recent conversation with Colin Cowherd.
When Brady was a playmaker in the Bill Belichick system, he learned to adjust his game plan on the fly according on what the defense was doing. Brady reflected on this experience during his interview on “The Herd.”
Tom Brady speaks about his Quarterback role
Without delving into details, Brady talked about playing teams like the Buffalo Bills and related his team’s tough strategy meetings. Regardless of the possible results, they carefully studied tactics to find flaws and create plays that would surprise opponents. Brady said,
“My job as a quarterback was always to delineate where the strengths and weaknesses were and was the play that I had called, was it able to take advantage of the weaknesses of the defense? And if it couldn’t, then I was supposed to get to a play that would,” Brady said.
Brady acknowledged that he doesn’t accomplish success by himself and thanked his previous squad for believing in him. For example, the Patriots’ offensive line was led by Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman. Gronk’s ability to catch and block presented a problem for opponents, while Edelman’s consistent playmaking alongside Brady was essential to the success of plays.
That said, Brady seems at ease as he makes the switch to the broadcast booth. The regimented environment reminds him of the habits he honed as a player.
