In the third round of the competition, Coco Gauff lost her maiden singles match at the Paris Olympic Games in shocking fashion. She was upset about the loss and accused the umpire of deceiving her.
The American was one among the competition’s favorites, but her trip was cut short.
The world no. 2 was defeated by Donna Vekic in straight sets, 7-6(7), 6-2. After ruling one of Vekic’s shots out, the chair umpire called Gauff’s shot out as well.
Coco Gauff’s dissapointment at losing
The umpire gave the Croatian the point, despite Gauff’s protests. As a result, Vekic led 4-0 in the second set and went on to win the set and the match.
At the conclusion of the game, Gauff was clearly upset as she was crying and arguing with the umpire about what she felt was unfair. She said,
“I feel like I’m getting cheated constantly in this game. This is the third time this happens to me this year,” “It always happens to me on this court. Call the supervisor. It always happens to me, every time. You understand that I always have to advocate for myself, all the time.”
Huge argument in the Donna Vekic – Coco Gauff match. Umpire called the ball out before Gauff returned the ball and missed it in break point for Vekic. Ball was in. Coco Gauff crying and saying this always happens to me 😭 pic.twitter.com/Fv8zreC1hY
