Jamal Murray‘s current contract with the Denver Nuggets expires in a year, raising questions about his future. Should the Nuggets object to the $208 million contract extension?. He is entitled to sign a four-year extension. The guard thinks the team will honor his request and give him the best offer, nevertheless.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania stated in an interview :
“I spoke to Jamal Murray last week at Team Canada’s practice. He’s very well aware they want to keep him long-term, and he told me he wants to be there.”
When questioned about Murray’s and the Nuggets’ decision to hold off on signing the contract until after the Olympics, Charania said he wasn’t sure what was going through their minds, although he did mention the guard’s history of injuries as a possible explanation. Due to an ACL tear, the guard was sidelined for the whole 2021–22 season and has only appeared in at least 60 games once in the previous five seasons.
Does Jamal Murray’s injury history concern Nuggets?
General Manager Calvin Booth, though, doesn’t seem to be concerned by his history of injuries. He discussed the Nuggets’ plan to sign Murray to an extension in an interview with SiriusXM NBA Radio. After the Olympics in Paris, he said, the front office would pick up again with the guard.
Booth restated that the team will not permit him to depart. He said :
“I mean Jamal’s been a staple of our program for the last eight years…Obviously, we’re very interested in getting something done with him.”
“We are very interested in getting something done with [Jamal Murray]”

Given Murray’s history of injuries, it should come as no surprise that the Nuggets aren’t worried about giving him a max contract. He has a track record of success in the postseason and was essential to their 2023 title run. It also doesn’t make much sense for the guard to leave a talented team. A team that includes forwards Aaron Gordon, Micheal Porter Jr., and three-time MVP Nikola Jokic.
Parting ways would not be beneficial to either party. Murray and the Nuggets would be best served by sticking together for the foreseeable future, as that appears to be their intention.
