Once more addressing her detractors, Simone Biles is defending her choice to let her spouse, Jonathan Owens, wear one of her recently acquired Olympic gold medals.
After posting a picture of himself sporting the gold medal that Biles and Team USA earned at the Olympics in Paris, the 27-year-old gymnast who had won the gold at the previous Olympics came under fire. Owens wrote :
“Witnessing history every time you step on the mat,”
“Congrats baby on becoming the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history!!!! Just wow!!!! 8 of them!!!!! So thankful I was there to see it.”
A few TikTok users went viral for objecting to Owens wearing Simon Biles’s medals
Although the post was viewed as a positive message by many followers, Owens was criticized by some for appearing to be bragging about his personal accomplishment.
With 2.1 million views, a video posted by Kiera Breaugh on TikTok telling Owens to “take her medal off,” went viral. Biles was not happy about the critique. She emphasized in response to Breaugh’s remarks that Owens wasn’t the only person to wear her medal. She posted,
“Crazy thing is, I put my medal on every single one of my family members and took pictures,” “So don’t ever make assumptions. Like y’all are so fu*king miserable. Leave us alone.”
After learning about Biles’s remarks, Breaugh later addressed them in a follow-up TikTok video. Breaugh said,
“I’m honored to be told to fu*k off by such a talented woman,”. “She put the medal on him. I can’t really be mad if she told him to [wear it].”
