Quarterback Russell Wilson was not able to report to the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ 2024 training camp due to a calf ailment. As would be predicted, this led to backup Justin Fields playing every minute. Fields has wowed fans and commentators by using the spotlight to his advantage, which has raised talk that he would take over as the starting quarterback.

For some Steelers supporters, the best-case scenario would have been Fields, 25, starting and Wilson serving as a mentor. But HC Mike Tomlin felt Wilson was the obvious pick because of his background and Lombardi Trophy. But now, with more recent events, the dynamics must have changed.
Would Russell Wilson have another disappointing season?
Fields is developing rapport with the receiving corps in addition to obtaining the most reps. Furthermore, Wilson was moving cautiously because of his injury, even though he was there at camp today, as analyst Gregg Rosenthal mentioned in his podcast. The pundit claimed that his presence was superfluous and voiced worries about the seasoned quarterback returning from injury too soon. He said,
“Russel Wilson, according to those who were there, wasn’t quite moving a lot. It was more about passes than moving around. So they’re treating that really gingerly, which is going to keep the door cracked open for Justin Fields [and] could affect this whole thing.”
Rosenthal also questioned whether Wilson’s attendance suggested that he was uneasy with Fields receiving more playing time and possibly taking his place:
“He’s a veteran, although it’s a new system, and he’s letting Justin Fields get those reps. And I’m sure he’s not feeling that comfortable about that, which is maybe why he’s forcing getting back on the field too early.”
This relationship is as old as time itself: one man’s loss is another man’s gain, even though these are all just conjectures at this point. Many will surely be sad to see Wilson’s ambitions fail following the unsatisfactory time in Denver.
