You Won’t Believe the New Role Travis Kelce Might Have for Chiefs

In 2024, Travis Kelce may play a surprising role for the Chiefs that nobody could have predicted. The start of the 2024 NFL regular season is exactly two weeks away. The Kansas City Chiefs will play their opening game of the season at Arrowhead Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens, as has become something of a tradition.

While the Chiefs added some intriguing new pieces in the summer, the team’s core players—Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, and several veterans—will return for a second Super Bowl run on September 5. Naturally, Kelce will start as tight end once more. Will he, however, have a different role in 2024?

Travis Kelce is the backup long snapper for Chiefs

Almost, but not quite. Though he’s still Mahomes’ go-to receiver and safety net, he’s also the team’s backup long snapper and can fill in if the starter is hurt. In a recent interview, Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub acknowledged as much.  He said,

“See, Kelce’s our backup long snapper. During the regular season, I can throw him in there and he’s dynamite, does a great job.”

The query wasn’t out of the blue; reserve tight end Noah Gray had to step in for starter James Winchester after the latter sustained a minor injury during the team’s most recent preseason game.
Kelce was not substituted for Winchester at that point in the game because he was not in the starting lineup. However, we would probably witness Kelce snapping the ball to the holder if the identical scenario occurred throughout the regular season.
