Mahomes was facing an almost impossible fourth-and-16 from his own 35-yard line with less than a minute remaining. Knowing that this was the kind of situation where Mahomes would either succeed or fail, the crowd held its breath. Butker’s game-winning kick was made possible by a contentious pass interference ruling on Cincinnati rookie Daijahn Anthony, which gave the Chiefs extra downs and hope.
Conversely, Joe Burrow turned in another outstanding effort, finishing 23 of 36 passes for 258 yards and two touchdown passes to Andrei Iosivas. Burrow has a 3-2 record versus Mahomes and has always shown his mettle in this battle. Trey Hendrickson torched rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia of Kansas City for two crucial sacks as the Bengals defense was unrelenting. His persistent pressure caused Mahomes to make snap choices, upsetting the offensive rhythm of Kansas City. Nonetheless, it appeared as though Kansas City was winning the game when the Chiefs began the second half with a protracted drive that was finished by a 1-yard touchdown pass to Wanya Morris.
