Pat McAfee is a man of strong opinions. Regarding CU Buffs, opinions don’t seem to be agreeable. Are they quality? Do they do harm? Although their total strength as a team is in doubt, their superstar players’ exceptional performances will probably determine their level of success this season. Pat McAfee expressed his opinions on College Gameday, criticizing the team for not being able to find a unique identity.
Although a Deion devotee growing up, McAffe didn’t hold back when he offered some pointed criticism. Despite praising Coach Prime’s guidance and the efforts they have been making, he made it clear that the HC still hasn’t succeeded in creating a winning culture:
“Their team building and culture building seemingly has not really worked out so far. I’m worried about the Buffaloes…They have good players to be a great team but nobody believes that they are a good team, they just think they have superstars.”

Sanders can lead the club, McAfee argues, but they haven’t done a good enough job of building a winning team culture. Colorado has an issue with this, especially considering how much better its opponents have gotten since the previous campaign. Given that the Buffs only finished with four wins in the previous season, the excitement around them ought to have subsided after that. Fans, however, are continuing to support the team lead by Deion Sanders.
After the Buffs upset ND State, they had some hope, but the very next week, they were crushed by the Cornhuskers. Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, two of the Buffaloes’ top 10 picks in the 2025 draft, are on the team. Prior to the season, both are Heisman Trophy candidates.
They also have Jimmy Horn Jr., LaJohntay Wester, and Will Shephard, three of the best wideouts in the game. One of the leaders in their secondary has been Shilo Sanders. While McAfee’s viewpoint may not be very influential in Colorado or college football, Nick Saban, his new game day co-host, has been a steadfast supporter of McAfee’s analysis of the Buffaloes.
