Things weren’t always this fantastic for Deion Sanders. The Buffs HC started his career with a unique hustle as a child, but today he has a net worth of over $45 million.
Sanders grew up in poverty, with a divorced family and an absent father in Fort Myers, Florida. He found his entrepreneurial talent in Myers while going to neighborhood baseball games.
He once told how he would skip school in order to gather home run balls and make money off of them. Stressing his quickness and resolve to seize these chances, he stated: “I used to beat everybody running when they hit the home run balls,”
He used to collect and sell balls that were hit during games in third grade, especially ones from the Kansas City Royals‘ spring training sessions.
He also looked for autographs from players like Amos Otis and George Brett, as well as cracked bats, which he sold for anywhere from $3.50 per ball to $15 per bat. He disclosed: “I would sit right there when they would come out of the clubhouse and I would get their autographs, and I would beg for cracked bats. Cracked bats were like 10 bucks or $15, A good home run ball in [batting practice] was like $3.50.”
In addition to giving him pocket money, this early endeavor gave him a business sensibility that would help him in his future endeavors. Well, the rest is history, as they say.
