Zach Edey, the ninth overall choice of the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2024 NBA Draft, is getting the attention he deserves. Kevin Garnett has been blown away by his preseason play. Paul Pierce spoke with the NBA icon on KG Certified about the preseason’s biggest surprises. Edey’s performances were promptly emphasized by Garnett.
The Big Ticket stated that his favorite preseason player thus far is the former Purdue big man. Garnett didn’t stop there. The 7’4 center’s hook shots and post plays, he said, remind him of none other than the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kevin said :
“I don’t know what we’re gonna call him for the whole year, but…Zach Edey looked like a goddamn Zach Alcindor [Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s previous name] out there motherf***er. That motherf***er looked like Yao out there…Man, he had Myles Turner looking like, you and Prince in the backyard, jump hooking…” “I like Memphis, man. I need to see it all out there,”
Can Zach Edey be as good as Kevin Garnett feels like he is ?
For a 22-year-old who is still figuring things out in the league, that is a significant compliment. Now, is there more to the hook shot he tried that made KG think of KAJ, or is it just that? Edey came off the bench and performed better than anyone else in the final preseason game against the Pacers. He played 19 minutes and finished with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and an assist.
Additionally, the 7’4 center is receiving praise for reinventing the famous hook shot that Abdul-Jabbar was famous for. KG’s recollections of the Lakers legend have been jogged by his recent efforts.
