Following the announcement on Friday that his next bout against Lamont Roach has been postponed until 2025, Gervonta Davis will not be making a comeback to the ring in 2024. ‘Tank’ was supposed to defend his WBA lightweight title in this bout. However, the battle will no longer take place on December 14 as planned, with no additional explanation.
As a result, Davis only engaged in combat once this year, defeating fellow countryman Frank Martin in eight rounds. He only engaged in combat twice in 2023, facing Dominican Hector Garcia in January and Ryan Garcia in April. He knocked them both unconscious.
Gervonta Davis will make his ring comeback in New York on March 1, 2025, as a result of this statement. When the fight versus Roach was first confirmed in early October, it was stated that it will happen in Houston on December 14. Nevertheless, no explanation for the date modification or postponement was provided.
Should Gervonta Davis be fighting more?
At the moment, ‘Tank’ Davis, who is still undefeated with a record of 30-0, 28 KOs, is ranked eighth in ESPN’s rankings, in the top 10 in The Ring’s pound-for-pound rankings, and still the best boxer in his division. However, he may be ranked higher for his talent if he makes more appearances.
His stunning knockout victory over Frank Martin in June, his first bout following a 44-day jail sentence this summer for breaking the conditions of house arrest following a hit-and-run incident in November 2020, served as proof of this.
Although it would have been a fantastic show, he was also in contact with Ukrainian boxer Vasiliy Lomachenko for a high-profile fight this fall, but the talks fell through, so he had to settle with a much less appealing event.
Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) is not favored in the rankings because he will be moving up from 130 pounds, where he is presently the WBA champion.
