The family of Randall Adjessom, who tragically lost his life at the hands of Alabama police officers during a no-knock raid, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the officers involved and the city of Mobile. The mother of the 16-year-old, along with other family members, allege that Adjessom was “killed in cold blood” and seek justice for their beloved son.
On November 13, 2023, at approximately 5:30 a.m., SWAT police forcefully entered Adjessom’s childhood home using a battering ram, while it was still dark outside. Randall Adjessom, who was peacefully asleep, was suddenly awakened by the terrifying presence of fully armed officers. It is important to note that Adjessom himself was not a suspect in any criminal activity.
The warrant that authorized this raid was related to an investigation into Adjessom’s older brother, who was suspected of marijuana possession and distribution.
The raid was racially motivated, Grant & Eisenhofer, the law firm representing Adjessom’s family, said in a Dec. 23 news release. “I still cannot believe Randall is gone, and that this is another holiday season where we have nothing to celebrate,” his mother, Akouvi Adjessom, said in a statement.
“But we have love in our hearts and love for Mobile, and know the vast majority of people in our city want what we want: to be treated fairly, equally and with respect by our police,” his family said.
In a statement on the lawsuit, the family’s civil rights attorneys Elizabeth A. Bailey, Cynthia B. Morgan and Steven A. Medina said: “The complaint is replete with revelations from our pre-suit investigation, perhaps none more repulsive than the fact that MPD body-worn camera (BWC) video of the shooting clearly shows Randall begin to retreat after realizing the intruders into his family home were members of the police force when he was repeatedly shot and killed in cold blood.”
The family’s lawsuit is seeking justice, accountability, and compensation for the wrongful death of their beloved son. They firmly believe that the officers involved and the city of Mobile should be held responsible for their actions, which they allege to be a gross violation of Randall Adjessom’s rights to due process and protection.
