A new complaint accuses former Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler of failing to pay rent on a posh Miami Beach mansion and abandoning the property in a state of disorder, putting him in legal hot water.
The now-Golden State Warriors forward is accused by Five Star Marketing and Promotions, Inc., a South Florida corporation, of causing significant property damage and missing two monthly payments for a Miami Beach residence he was renting.
The complaint was filed weeks after Butler’s trading drama, which resulted in his departure from the Heat and his signing with the Warriors. Five Star and Butler signed a two-year lease on a posh house at 520 Lakeview Ct. in Miami Beach on August 10, 2022.
Jimmy Butler’s lawsuit in question
According to the lawsuit, Butler remained a holdover renter in the house after the lease ended on August 10, 2024. A “holdover tenant” is any renter who remains at a property after a lease expires, for which the landlord will take the appropriate steps to either evict the tenant or bind them to a new lease, according to Cornell University’s Legal Information Institute.
The complaint claims that the lease agreement indicated that “the amount of rent due during such hold over period shall be double the rent specified after the expiration of this lease without the written permission of the landlord.” Therefore, Butler was required to pay $130,000 in rent under the terms of the lease. But according to Five Star, Butler didn’t pay.
According to the lawsuit, Butler once more neglected to pay the rent when it was due the following month. Butler allegedly neglected to pay rent and let the opulent house deteriorate into “complete disrepair due to misuse, neglect and waste,” according to the lawsuit.
