At the Vancouver Street Festival, a Car Crashed Into a Crowd, Killing Several People and Injuring Others

At the scene of a collision that left “several people killed and multiple others injured” on Saturday, April 26, Vancouver Police have taken a 30-year-old man into custody.

After “a man drove into a large crowd of people attending the Lapu Lapu Day Festival” at around 8:14 p.m., close to East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street, local authorities in South Vancouver posted a statement to X stating that they were “investigating a mass casualty incident at a neighborhood block party.”

The police statement also stated: “A 30-year-old suspect, a Vancouver man, was arrested at the scene.” The release went on to say that the Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crime Section is in charge of the ongoing investigation.

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada also expressed his sadness on X, saying he was “devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver.”

The incident occurred shortly after the day’s last performance, according to Yoseb Vardeh, who was driving a Bao Buns food truck at the festival. He told the BBC that the car went “completely straight, right through the crowd” at about 60 mph.

He also told the outlet that once the motorist stopped and tried to flee, he was forcibly restrained by bystanders.
