For the First Time in Twenty Years, Sammy Sosa Returns to Wrigley With Emotion

On Friday afternoon, as his picture appeared on the old ballpark’s video board outside the left-field bleachers, Sammy Sosa blew kisses and tapped his heart to the Wrigley Field audience. For Cubs supporters, it was a sight they had been anticipating for more than 20 years.

Sosa hadn’t visited the Friendly Confines in twenty-one years, but after settling his differences with the ballclub during the winter, the Cubs legend made his way back to the location of his numerous acts of valor. When asked if he was concerned that his presence may elicit a mixed response, Sosa laughed and displayed his signature smile.

When the Cubs lost to the Mariners 9–4, Sosa stated: “Are you kidding? This is my house,” In a sense, Sosa also assisted in rebuilding the house.

Since he hit home runs onto Waveland Avenue and blew kisses into the camera next to the home dugout, Wrigley Field and the community around it have changed. The baseball world watched him and Mark McGwire break the single-season home run record in 1998.
