Allen Iverson Pays Tribute to Julius Erving

Two of the most thrilling players to ever play in the NBA were Allen Iverson and Julius Erving.

Fortunately for fans of the Philadelphia 76ers, both luminaries were members of their team. It’s unbelievable that the two of them only managed to win one NBA championship between them, with Erving, better known as Dr. J, ultimately defeating the Boston Celtics, their Eastern Conference foe, and the Showtime Los Angeles Lakers in the last round.

Given just one title alone, it is even more astounding. Charles Barkley spent most of his playing career with the Sixers as well.

This week, Philly’s AI went sentimental on Instagram, sharing a carousel with the straightforward comment, “Passing of the torch,” in remembrance of his 75-year-old, acrobatic predecessor. Barkley earned an NBA MVP award with the Phoenix Suns, but all three did so once.

Iverson, who turned 50 last month, came the closest to winning that ring in 2001 when he advanced to the NBA Finals before falling short against the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O’Neal in the second of their three-peat.

It was an enjoyable voyage with all three, despite the fact that the duet or trio only has one title. And, dare we say it, far more thrilling, as the elderly man yells at the skies.
