Patrick Mahomes Gets a Reality Check from Mike Florio

Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Chiefs and the NFL’s face, isn’t excited about the idea of playing in 18 games. He wants players to have a second bye week if the league decides to extend the season.

The NFL isn’t fond of that idea, though. According to reports, team owners are advocating for the 18-game schedule to maintain its existing format, which includes a single bye week. Why is it so difficult to add a second farewell? NFL insider Mike Florio claims that the league’s long-term scheduling strategy is the main factor.

The league would have to start the season on Labor Day weekend, something they haven’t done since 2001 and are hesitant to do again, if they added a second bye. He said:

“I am all for that, but I don’t think the league is. I think the league’s position is going to be 18 games, one bye. And here’s why. They got this fascination, as do many fans, and this is why the league is embracing it. President’s Day weekend Super Bowl. If you add another game, most of your Super Bowls are going to land on Presidents Day weekend.  If you got a second bye, then you got a problem, you’re going to shoot President’s Day weekend, or you’ve got to start on Labour Day weekend.”

Florio also cautioned that it might only be the beginning if the NFLPA finally accepts the 18-game model, which they may, particularly if it includes more revenue share and the removal of optional preseason activities. The league may eventually push for 20 games after 18 are considered standard, which would further prolong the regular season and put more pressure on the players.
